National Motoring Heritage Day – 25 May 2023

This year’s Motoring Heritage Day motorcade run was set for a winding path through the heritage and popular public areas of central Canberra, starting from the Red Hill summit carpark and ending with a Presentation Lunch at the Oaks Brasserie, Weston Park.

The weather fined up nicely after a chilly winter start. 49 members and guests took part, bringing 23 historic vehicles. The vehicles showed an excellent representation of the scope of CACMC’s membership, with vehicle ages ranging from 97 years ( the Noads’ 1926 Morris Oxford) to a chipper 32 years (Garry Binkhorst’s 1991 Saab 9000).

The motorcade caught plenty of attention from pedestrians and other drivers in popular spaces such as Manuka, Old and New Parliament house precincts, Queen Elizabeth Terrace across the southern lakefront, Anzac Parade, Lonsdale Street Braddon, Bunda Street in Civic, and Weston Park in Yarralumla.

See Geoff Hall’s short video of some of our cars on the motorcade route here.

Thanks to all those who brought out their significant vehicles to demonstrate the vitality of the motoring heritage community in Canberra.

Two cars new to CACMC – the Tabers’ 1949 Chrysler Windsor, and the Salcedos’ 1984 Nissan Bluebird – at the Red Hill rendezvous. Note the approving magpie.

Long term members Dino Benedetti, Graham Boyce and the Gallaghers had their cars in top presentation for the event.

Scott Molloy’s two muscle cars turned heads with sight and sound. Scott drove his 1972 GTS Monaro with passenger Lukas Strohmayer (jnr), while Scott’s 1973 XB Falcon Coupe was driven by Bob Alexander with wife Helen.

Malcolm and Wendy Noad’s 1926 Morris Oxford blended elegantly into the English Garden at Weston Park, planted around the time this car was built.

Presentations in the Oaks Brasserie extension.

The Hall, Jones and Strohmayer families brought a welcome new generation into the enjoyment of heritage vehicles through our club.
